A day at Praia de Quarteira.
Quarteira’s beach follows the town’s waterfront, with the Avenida Marginal promenade behind the sand. Sea walls divide the shore into sections, giving the beach a very different rhythm from an uninterrupted dune strand. Shops, cafés and restaurants are part of the day rather than a separate drive away.
It is a useful choice when you want to arrive on foot from town and keep a meal or a break close at hand. Choose a particular section or beach concession for meeting up, because the promenade extends a considerable distance. A walk towards the eastern end brings you to Forte Novo and the transition from town to dunes.
Parking & arrival
Outdoor parking is listed. Use legal town parking, allowing for the walk from your space to the particular section of promenade and beach you want.
The route to the sand
The waterfront provides the main pedestrian approach from town. Use designated entrances between the promenade and sand rather than crossing the sea walls.
Accessibility
VisitPortugal lists an accessible beach. Choose an equipped signed entrance; the complete route to the water still depends on the position of seasonal walkways and the sand.
Facilities at the beach
- Showers
- Beach bar
- Restaurant
- Sunshade hire
- Small-craft hire
Beach concessions and equipment hire are seasonal. The village or resort has a wider choice than the sand itself.
The water & lifeguards
Stay away from the sea walls and follow the marked swimming zones. Watch the flags at your section rather than assuming conditions are the same along the whole waterfront.
Lifeguard cover is seasonal, not year-round. Use the staffed bathing area and follow the flags displayed on the day.
