A day at Praia do Peneco.
Peneco is the western part of the main beach below Albufeira’s Old Town. The tunnel through the limestone cliff gives it the alternative name Praia do Túnel. A large rock on the sand is its other landmark, with cafés and restaurants a short walk away in the streets above.
The appeal is the easy combination of a town visit and time on the sand. You can arrive on foot from the Old Town rather than driving to an outlying cove. Choose the route that suits your group: the central tunnel, the western staircase and the Rossio lift lead to different approaches, and the lift should not be the only workable part of a plan that depends on step-free access.
Parking & arrival
Use signed Albufeira town parking and continue on foot. VisitPortugal lists parking, but the narrow Old Town streets and tunnel are not a place to expect a seafront parking space.
The route to the sand
The municipality lists the Old Town tunnel, the western staircase and an elevator at Rossio as access routes. Follow the pedestrian signs for the entrance you want.
Accessibility
VisitPortugal lists Peneco as accessible. The Rossio lift is an important option; have an alternative meeting point if it is unavailable and allow for the final stretch of sand.
Facilities at the beach
- Showers
- Beach bar
- Restaurant
- Sunshade hire
- Small-craft hire
Beach concessions and equipment hire are seasonal. The village or resort has a wider choice than the sand itself.
The water & lifeguards
Leave space around the rock and cliffs where danger signs indicate. Follow beach flags and avoid using caves or cliff recesses as shelter.
Lifeguard cover is seasonal, not year-round. Use the staffed bathing area and follow the flags displayed on the day.
