What to expect
The chapel dates from the seventeenth century and is dedicated to Portugal’s patron saint. Its plain exterior contrasts with the decorated interior, where eighteenth-century tiles and carved woodwork sit beneath a later ceiling painting by the Algarve artist Joaquim Rasquinho.
The building also meets the history of Loulé’s former defences: restoration revealed remains associated with an old entrance to the medieval town. Its central location makes it an easy addition to a walk around the castle quarter, with visitor access managed separately from the larger parish church.
Planning your visit
- This small chapel has its own visitor arrangements, separate from São Clemente.
- The exterior is restrained; the principal decorative interest is inside.
