What to expect

The Carmo church is easy to recognise by its broad frontage and two bell towers. Its scale is a striking contrast to the smaller lanes around it, and the building is one of the principal religious landmarks outside Faro’s walled old town.

The Chapel of Bones is part of this same site, so there is no need to plan it as a separate journey. Its human remains make it a more reflective and potentially unsettling visit than a conventional church interior; decide whether that element suits everyone in your group.

Planning your visit

  • The Chapel of Bones includes human remains.
  • Steps and a narrow passage affect access to the bone chapel.
