What to expect
The present church was rebuilt towards the end of the eighteenth century after the devastation of 1755. Its architectural character belongs to that rebuilding, while the interior preserves sacred sculpture, altarpieces and other pieces of the town’s religious heritage.
Use the Matriz as one anchor of an old-town church walk rather than confusing it with the smaller Sant’Ana or São Sebastião churches. It remains a place of worship, so any opportunity to look inside sits alongside the life of the parish.
