What to expect

The church was rebuilt after the earthquake and consecrated in the early nineteenth century. Its patron is Nossa Senhora da Luz, whose image is a focus of the main altar; older religious objects and later decoration contribute to the interior’s layered character.

This is a church in Lagoa town, inland from Carvoeiro, rather than the chapel above Carvoeiro beach. It pairs naturally with a walk through Lagoa’s older streets and a separate visit to the former São José convent nearby.
