What to expect

Dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Conceição, the Matriz is one of the main religious landmarks of central Portimão. Much of its original fabric changed after the earthquake, but the principal doorway and decorated holy-water fonts retain a connection with the earlier church.

Use it as a starting point for the historic centre, then continue towards Praça da República or the riverside. It is an active parish church, with ordinary community life taking place alongside its architectural interest.

Planning your visit

  • This is the Matriz in Portimão town, not the Amparo church or Alvor’s main church.
  • Parish worship has priority over tourist visits.
