Ermida de Santa Catarina, Praia da Rocha

Santa Catarina is the small chapel within Praia da Rocha’s seafront fortress, a religious detail easily missed among the views over the beach and river mouth.

What to expect

The chapel occupies the interior of Fortaleza de Santa Catarina above the eastern end of Praia da Rocha. Its compact nave leads to a sanctuary dedicated to Saint Catherine, with blue tile decoration among the features described by the municipality.

It works best as part of a fortress visit rather than a separate long excursion. The fortress surroundings and viewpoints do not guarantee that the chapel interior is open, so an exterior look may be the available experience.

Planning your visit

  • The chapel is inside the fortress, not the larger Amparo church in Portimão.
  • Interior access is separate from access to the fortress surroundings.
