What to expect
The earlier chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Piedade was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1755. It is now part of a larger sanctuary complex, where the contrast between the older devotional building and the modern worship space is part of the experience.
The sanctuary is closely associated with Loulé’s Mãe Soberana celebrations around Easter. Even outside the festival, the hilltop setting gives the visit a different feel from the churches in the town streets; allow for the uphill approach rather than treating it as another flat old-town stop.
