What to expect
The three-nave cathedral preserves pointed Gothic forms alongside later Baroque alterations, including the bell tower and side entrance. It served as the Algarve’s episcopal seat before the move to Faro in the sixteenth century, making it central to the story of medieval Silves.
The church also contains historic tombs and memorials, including the reminder of João II’s burial here before his remains were moved. Combine the cathedral with the surrounding old-town streets and nearby Misericórdia church; they are distinct sites rather than two names for the same monument.
Planning your visit
- Visitor access follows the cathedral’s own arrangements, separate from the castle.
